Q. The average age of a husband and a wife was 23 years when they were married five years ago. The present average age of the husband, the wife and a child who born during the interval, is 20 years. How old is the child?
Traditiona Method: Suppose age of Child is = A
Since average of Husband & Wife is 23 i.e. (Husband + Wife)/2 = 23
i.e. Husband+ Wife=2 X 23 =56
Since average of Husband, Wife & Son is 20 i.e. (Husband + Wife + Son)/3 =20
i.e. Husband+ Wife+ Son=3X 20 =60
i.e. 56 + Son= 60 i.e. Son= 60-56= 4 years
TLT: Talk to yourself as “since the average of 2 people is 28 means total is 28X2=56, whereas the average of 3 people is 20 means total is 20X3=60, and this third person is the son”. So the age of the son is 60-56= 4 years.
TLT: Talk to yourself as “the decrease in average is 3 years if the son is included, means total decrease is 3X3= 9 years, which is now. Therefore, before 5 years it would be 9-5= 4 years, due to the age of the son.
